Maryville University’s own Style Council club is brand-new this semester. The club was recently nominated for “Best New Organization” at the annual Golden Louies, an award that recognizes one notable club that is new within the last 5 years.

The club is based around fashion and the fashion industry. President, China-Fumi Page explains, “Fashion is like a culture within a culture and I feel like people don’t understand the business side of the industry.”

Specifically, the council offers clothing style tips for how to successfully implement fashion in the business world and learn professional dressing etiquette.

“I want people to understand how fashion can even make a difference with getting jobs,” said Page. In addition, the council offers a place to learn about and discuss fashion and style in general.

The group currently collaborates with Maryville’s Black Male Initiative club and “Mocha Tea” group but are very excited to diversify their members and wants anyone and everyone to join. “Be on the lookout! Feel free to join and participate,” adds Page.

The first ever Style Council Fashion Show is in the works which will take place when school resumes in the Fall. Tiana Bowman, Vice President of The Style Council, shares that she is “most excited for the fashion show where we can have a lot of different boutiques come out. I can’t wait for Maryville to come out and participate in the show!”

The group is also planning clothing and shoe expos which will invite different vendors to the campus to sell their fashion items. The council also hopes to benefit the larger community with clothing drives. They will be collecting clean, lightly worn clothes for those in need.
