• Bookmarks: 7

One thing that a lot of people think that they know about, especially in college, is sex. The fact of the matter is that many people don’t know what they think they know. In the process of investigating this, a group of eight students, who wished to remain anonymous, answered some true or false statements about sex to assess what they really knew on the subject.

Statement 1: There is a point when you can’t say no during a sexual interaction.

True: 3

According to the mandatory Title IX training at Maryville, it is important to know that you can say stop at any point without consequence. If your stop goes unheeded, it becomes a sexual assault which should be immediately be reported to our campus’ Public Safety as well as to to the local police. Sexual assault is something that is extremely serious and you should be aware of what to do in every situation.

Statement 2: You can’t get an STD from oral sex.

True: 4

False: 4

Correct Answer: False, STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can be transmitted orally.

For those who don’t know, Maryville University offers free STD testing and pregnancy testing at the Thrive van located between Reid and the faculty parking lot. The testing takes about 30 minutes to complete. Results will be received between five and seven days. To learn more information about the sort of testing and services provided, Alena Francis went on the bus to find out more. Overall, the experience could be described as quick and friendly. The women providing the services were more than respectful and remained non-judgmental. It was overall a highly positive experience. It is highly encouraged that everyone go get tested while the service is provided. The Thrive van is on campus every month on the second and fourth Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feel free to check out their website for other services provided.

Statement 3: Babies cost only 100,000 dollars to raise from birth to 18.

True: 0

False: 8

Correct Answer: False. Babies cost at least 245,000 dollars in the U.S.

For those who don’t understand how much that is really worth, it is enough money to pay for any of the following: 19 semesters of Maryville tuition, six private islands in Maine or traveling the world 10 times.

Imagine what you could actually do with that money if you aren’t interested in having children. It is extremely important to always have some form birth control. The most effective form of birth control is abstinence, but condoms are the next best thing. They are given out for free in the Health and Wellness office located in Student Success.

These are just a few educational tips, feel free to chime in more and tweet us @mvillepawprint!
