On November 29th, Saints Talk was able to interview Joe Posnanski of Sports Illustrated. Posnanski is the two-time AP Sportswriter of the Year and has been named Best Sportswriter in Missouri ten times. The following is the transcript of the interview.

Saints Talk: So we’ve seen your fascination with the Derek Jeter situation on Twitter and we’re curious to see how you believe it will sort itself out.

Posnanski: Well I think it’s going to work out. He’s going to end up back with the Yankees and I think everyone knows that. The question is now, how they will work it out so both parties can save face. And that’s not going to be that easy. Especially the latest with Jeter’s people coming out and leaking how much they wanted, 25 million a year, or something ridiculous like that. Just a ridiculous number. I think what will eventually happen is the Yankees will raise their number some, but they won’t go as high as they paid him before despite what some people have said. He’ll get 17 million a year. The Yankees might throw in an extra year and they will raise it enough to give him an out, so he can accept that and still be the great Derek Jeter. I think that is how it will work out, but it’s definitely more contentious than anyone expected it to be already, so there could be other surprises. You just never know when one team is going to come in as some crazy mystery bidder. No one would be willing to give Jeter as much as the Yankees, but if a team comes in they could definitely change the situation a little bit. It will definitely be interesting.

Saints Talk: You see the rumors of other teams contacting Jeter to see if they can work something. Are these teams legitimate threats to steal Jeter from the Yankees or are they just trying to make Jeter more expensive for the Yankees?

Posnanski: I don’t think so. I think there is literally a 0% chance. He’s not going to go play for the Giants. I mean the Giants would be a legitimate bidder considering they just won the World Series, but there is just no way. He won’t leave the Yankees. I think we will definitely see there be some leaks. It’s in his agent’s best interest to report there is interest from other teams. Just to keep the Yankees on their toes to make them feel like it’s not a done deal, which it is. I think the Yankees could stay firm right where they are and at the end of the day, Derek Jeter will sign with them because he has no choice.

Saints Talk: The thing is that Jeter is the face of the Yankees and he has been so long, that no one in their right mind can see him in anything, but the Pinstripes.

Posnanski: Certainly not. He’ll get 3000 hits this year. He’ll be a Yankee. I think it’s important for the Yankees to give him an escape out. Right now, he is looking like the greedy guy and the Yankees need to help him out because they don’t want just Derek Jeter back. They want Derek Jeter, the icon, back.

Saints Talk: Speaking of Derek Jeter, he once again won a Gold Glove. As a voter on the Fielding Bible Awards, you didn’t even have him in the top 20. Does it bother you to see you the Gold Glove go to guys that might not necessarily deserve it year in and year out?

Posnanski: Well, it’s kind of silly. It’s silly for Derek Jeter to win the Gold Glove, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve taken a closer look at the Gold Glove. It’s voted on by the managers and I think what it is, more than anything, is their acknowledgment that someone plays the game the right way. I think it’s a respect for Derek Jeter. I don’t know that there are really many managers out there that think Derek Jeter is the best fielding shortstop in the American League, but I think all of them think there is a guy that plays the game the right way. There is a guy I would love to have him on my team, so I’ll vote for him. What’s been very interesting about the American League the last few years is that there isn’t really a great defensive shortstop in the American League. There is Elvis Andrus, the young guy in Texas, who is coming on, but there isn’t an Ozzie Smith or Omar Vizquel or somebody who is a very clear cut choice. I obviously won’t have voted for him considering I didn’t even have him on the Top 10 of my Fielding Bible Awards list, but I don’t think it’s a travesty or anything. I think it’s just an honor they give to him to represent Derek Jeter and what he’s all about.

Saints Talk: We’re in St. Louis, so obviously we have lots of listeners wondering if you think voters got it right when they decided to give the NL MVP to Joey Votto instead of Albert Pujols?

Posnanski: I think it was so close that you could really have gone either way. Pujols is the MVP every year. He’s the best player in baseball and he has been for some time now, but I think Votto had a great year. The Reds had a great year. I think I use to be a little bit more militant about this. That there was ONE guy and he was the right guy. To me, both of those guys deserved it and they were both very close. I don’t have a problem with Votto. I think Votto was very, very valuable to a team that won the division. I didn’t vote, but I feel like Votto was a very viable choice.

Saints Talk: Is it getting to be the same situation with Pujols as it was with Michael Jordan in the NBA, where even though Jordan was undoubtedly the best player in the league he wasn’t winning the MVP?

Posnanski: I think with Michael Jordan it got silly. He was so clearly the best yet they were picking Karl Malone just because they wanted to reward someone other than Jordan. I don’t think it’s like that this year with Pujols and Votto. I think they were very very close. I think you can make a very strong argument for either one of those guys. Certainly you could vote for Albert and say that he was the best, but Votto was terrific. I think this case it came down to two very close guys and the Reds winning was probably the decisive factor. I’m not a huge fan of a team’s success becoming a factor on the award, but it is part of the voting and I think Votto was a pretty good choice.

Saints Talk: With Felix Hernandez and Tim Lincecum winning the Cy Young Award in the past two years, do you think we are starting to see the statistical evolution takeover Cy Young award voting?

Posnanski: I don’t think it’s just wins and losses anymore, I think people are looking at overall stats. ERA has become very prominent and it always was, but I think people are now starting to see that wins and losses can be very deceiving. It’s not the best way to tell. Sometimes a pitcher can 13-12 and it really undercuts how great of a player he is. I voted for Felix Hernandez and thought he was the best pitcher, but I voted Sabathia number two. I thought C.C. had a great year and there were definitely arguments beyond the wins and losses to be made for him to win the Cy Young. I think if you look at the two different parks these two pitch in, they were very, very close.
