St. Louis Mardi Gras: More Than Just the Beads, Boas and Booze

Ready to tap into the spirit of Mardi Gras?  Well, you don’t have to travel to New Orleans to take part in the Mardi Gras festivities.  St. Louis hosts the most extravagant Mardi Gras parade in the nation behind Louisiana’s, of course.  This year Mardi Gras weekend begins Feb. 9 and ends with Fat Tuesday on Feb. 12, but you don’t have to wait until then to strap on your purple, green and gold!  St. Louis is home to numerous events which began on Jan. 6and run each weekend until Grand Parade day.

In the cards for this weekend are two events you won’t wanna miss!  Friday, Jan. 25get a shot of winter warmth at the Mardi Gras Wine, Beer and Whiskey Taste.  In the Rotunda of St. Louis City Hall from 6:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. experience the real fun of Mardi Gras with adult beverages for the taking. The event features various wines from a wide range of vintners, as well as beers from Anheuser-Busch InBev and whiskeys from the Jack Daniel’s family.  Plus, enjoy entertainment provided by one of the hottest DJ’s in St. Louis and artwork courtesy of cutting-edge St. Louis artists. 

However, if food fits your fancy, the Crystal Cajun Cook-Off, set to take place Saturday, Jan.26, might be the place for you!  It’s the second event of the double header weekend.  Come and watch from noon until 4 p.m. as ten professional chefs and ten amateur chefs battle it out for best Cajun/creole dish.  Get in the spirit of the season and enjoy samples of the Cajun dishes along with Bud Light beer, Southern Comfort hurricanes, and soft drinks.  It is one of the region’s most prominent cooking competitions; you’re gonna have to see to believe!

Clearly, there is more to St. Louis Mardi Gras than just the beads, boas, and booze on Grand Parade Day.  There are over fifteen events taking place in the Soulard neighborhood and downtown areas to really get you in the spirit of the season.
