With a few weeks of school already under our belts, students have free time with the homework load slowing down. What are you going to do with your small amount of leisure time? Why not stream a favorite TV show on Netflix?
Netflix is the college student’s dream alternative to TV. With the ability to stream television shows and movies to any internet capable device, Netflix allows viewers the ability to stop and start their favorite movies and shows at leisure.
Netflix.com describes themselves as the, “…leading Internet television network with more than 30 million members in 40 countries enjoying more than one billion hours of TV shows and movies per month… For one low monthly price, Netflix members can watch as much as they want…”
But with Netflix’s wide array of options, what are you going to watch? Instead of wasting time searching aimlessly on Netflix.com for a TV show you might enjoy, here my top five favorite picks for TV shows that you should start streaming on Netflix now:
“Bones”: This dark humored crime drama follows the team of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan, played by Emily Deschanel, and FBI special agent Seeley Booth, played by David Boreanaz, as they solve FBI case files revolving around the discovery of, you guessed it, bones. This show is great for the mystery, humor and chemistry between the two main characters. There are seven seasons currently available on Netflix, and the eighth season is airing now on Fox.
“Psych”: This hilarious detective comedy follows the antics of Shawn Spencer, played by James Roday, as he works as a consultant for the Santa Barbara Police Department. Gifted with a very developed sense of observational skills and crime solving ability, Shawn convinces people he solves cases with psychic abilities. His partner and best friend Burton “Gus” Guster, played by Dulé Hill, helps him out when those ‘psychic abilities’ get him into trouble. This show is great for its witty jokes. There are six seasons available on Netflix, and the seventh season returns to USA on Feb. 27.
“Merlin”: Based on the legends of King Arthur, the wizard Merlin and Camelot, this fantasy drama is both exciting and funny. Originally aired on the British television network BBC, Merlin has both British and American style humor. It follows a young Merlin, played by Colin Morgan, and his friendship with the prince of Camelot, Arthur Pendragon, played by Bradley James. This is a favorite for the lover of fantasy stories. There are currently four seasons streaming on Netflix, and the fifth and final season is airing every Friday on SyFy.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”: Widely known in popular culture, this drama features a young ‘Vampire Slayer,’ Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, as she and her group of friends protect their town and high school from the attacks of vampires, demons and the like. “Buffy” is witty and, as the show progresses, increasingly dark. However, it is a kick-butt show, full of girl-power and vampire ‘staking.’ All seven seasons of the show are available on Netflix.
“Mythbusters”: This show is a science experiment/documentary show that focuses on proving or disproving commonly held popular or cultural beliefs. Hosted by Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman this show is full of interesting, larger than life experiments and lots and lots of explosives. The hosts and other cast members have good senses of humor (and a lot of dynamite), so this show is nothing like those boring science videos they made you watch in elementary school. There are nine collections available to stream on Netflix, and new episodes return to the Discovery Channel in the spring.
