Maryville University’s American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Interior Design Student Chapter is hosting the ASID Green Fashion Show on Thursday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m in the Donius University Center. Participating students will create an outfit representing what it means to be “green,” and strut the runway in their nature-inspired, imaginative outfits! The goal of the fashion show is the raise awareness for sustainability and to enjoy everyone’s hard work and creativity.

“The purpose of the ASID/IIDA Green Fashion Show is to show student’s creativity while turning trash into fashion! The great thing about the show is that it’s not limited to Maryville students, or even art-type students for that matter. It’s for any student who is interested in joining,” said Kelly Ward, vice president of ASID. “This fashion show helps bring awareness to how many things we can do with recycled goods, as well as how important it is to keep our planet healthy. This year’s show features what the students’ idea of what “green” means to them. We are hoping that we will have all types of takes on being green to show that there isn’t just one right or wrong way to be sustainable.”

More than 200 people are expected to attend this year. To attend, you need to donate (at least) one, non-perishable food item or pay $1 to see the show! At the end, people can vote for their favorite outfit by bringing up to 5 canned goods and use them as voting tokens. So if you plan on attending, bring at least 6 canned goods for admission and voting! All goods will be donated to a local food pantry of the winning team’s choice.

Participating teams must create an outfit based on their own idea of what it means to be “green.” There are no limits to costume creativity! Students can use recycled materials, green materials, organic materials or anything that represents green to them! One of the team members must be the model and walk the runway wearing the team’s creation.

As a bonus, this year’s event is not limited to Maryville students! Anyone currently enrolled in a university can be a team member. The only restriction is team members cannot exceed four people, including the model.

There will be three judges at the show this year, including A.J. Thouvenot from Season 8 of Project Runway! The judging will be based on three categories: Best Concept (this is the Grand Prize), Best Use of Material, and People’s Choice (decided by the audience by voting with canned goods).

To join the fashion show, contact Ward at: kward@live.maryville.edu and include your team name; number of team members (no more than four); members’ names, schools, majors and years; main contact for the team; and name of your model.

Happy creating, everyone!
