Sophomore Dani Shelton Crowned New Miss Maryville

Say hello to your new Miss Maryville, Dani Shelton. On March 17, 2011, Fantasia Nelson, no longer a student at Maryville, was crowned 2011 Miss Maryville. Nelson was unable to continue at the university this academic year thus naming Shelton, initially first runner-up, the new Miss Maryville.

The Miss Maryville scholarship pageant is the first event of its kind. It was created by senior Brianna Harrell in 2010. The purpose of the pageant is to select a female student who embodies the values and traditions of the university and focuses on leadership, scholarship and personality. The winner of the pageant receives a $500 scholarship toward her continuing education at Maryville University.

“When I found out I was the new Miss Maryville, I was surprised and a little guilty,” said Shelton. “I felt like the title was not rightfully mines but nevertheless I was flattered and grateful.”

“I’m happy to have handed the crown down to Dani, she was a super great competitor and I know she will do an excellent job at fulfilling the duties as the new Miss Maryville,” said Nelson.

The pageant is set to take place once again on March 15, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the university auditorium.  An information session for interested girls is to be announced later in October.

Founder Harrell stated, “I’m proud of Dani and Fantasia for being respectful and honorable toward one another during this transition. They were a blast to have in the group last year. This year, unfortunately, we’re a bit late getting the word out about the pageant but I’m hoping the success of the first two will make its way around campus and bring in interested girls.”
