Quick, Healthy, Cheap: Recipies for the Dorm

Are you sick and tired of searching for healthy meals in the dining hall and being forced to eat the same things time and time again when you do come across something descent? If you cannot face eating yet another veggie burger, try creating some of your own healthy meals and snacks. The recipes below do not require anything more than the microwave and refrigerator in your dorm room or apartment. Some of these five healthy and simple meals’ ingredients can be found in the bookstore or vending machines. Any fruits and vegetables can be bought, as needed, from salad bars to save money.

MEXICO IN A BOWL  
INGREDIENTS INSTRUCTIONS
-shredded or nacho cheese, salsa, sour cream, taco meat; beef or strips of chicken 

-olives (optional)

-Fritos or tortilla chips

-follow package directions to heat up meat or dip. Put serving of meat in bowl. Top with your favorite toppings. Add Fritos or tortilla chips for your“taco shell”

 

WRAP AROUND  
INGREDIENTS INSTRUCTIONS
- spreadable cream cheese, deli meat, sliced cucumbers

- olives (optional)

- peppers (optional)

- tortilla

- Spread cream cheese on tortilla. Place meat on top of cheese. Thinly spread cheese on meat. Place veggies on layer of cheese. 

- Roll into a wrap

 

ROLLY-POLLIES  
INGREDIENTS INSTRUCTIONS
- oatmeal

- peanut butter,

- chocolate syrup or chocolate chips (or any chocolate candy you have) smashed.

- Melt chocolate chips (or candy pieces). Mix peanut butter, oatmeal, and chocolate. Roll mixture into balls. Let sit to firm.

 

SUPER SIMPLE SPUDS  
INGREDIENTS INSTRUCTIONS
- hash browns, sour cream, shredded cheese, chopped green onions 

- salsa (optional)

- bacon bits (optional)

- broccoli (optional)

- Microwave hash browns until hot. Top with your favorite baked potato toppings.

 

MOCHA PARFEIT  
INGREDIENTS INSTRUCTIONS
- coffee flavored yogurt, chocolate chips or pieces of chocolate candy, Cool Whip
 

- pecans (optional)

Mix chocolate into the yogurt. Put pecans on top (if using pecans). Dollop Cool Whip on top of everything.

 

***The parfait can also be made with vanilla yogurt, strawberries, chocolate chips or pieces of candy, and Cool Whip.
